But Max doesn’t go after Jeanie.

He walks to his car angle-parked in front of the building, opens the driver’s side door, and stands looking back. The front of the old building has been fixed up with new windows, rock facing, and heavy timber post-and-beam trim. Prairie Equity gleams in tall brass letters over the door. All new and shiny on the outside, he thinks, but same old rot on the inside. He realizes he’s had enough of fucking Donnie. All these assholes, actually. More than enough. Threatening Jeanie crosses the line.

“I can’t help you, Jeanie,” he mutters, “but I’ll be fucked if I’ll help them.” He gets into his Mustang and drives to his house.

Once home, he fills garbage bags with his clothes, opens the floor safe, and empties the contents into a duffel bag.

Then he makes a phone call. “Hey, Arnie. Got a favor to ask. I’m goin’ away for a while. My hog’s in the driveway. You know where the keys are. Can you guys swing by and pick it up? Yeah, today. Right now if you can. The shop? Yeah, that’d be good … I’ll let you know … Thanks, buddy.”

He turns the phone off and lays it on the kitchen counter. Divesting himself of the company phone, symbolically severing ties, lifts a weight off his shoulders. “Consider this my letter of resignation,” he says to no one.

When his bags are stuffed in the trunk, he gets Delilah to hop in the back and settles himself in the driver’s seat. He drives out to the Trans-Canada Highway and heads west.
